Position Title: Mechanical Design Engineer

Start Date: ASAP
Location: Santa Clara, CA – fully onsite
Duration: 6+month contract to hire (opportunity for conversion after 6-12 months)

Project Details:
A leading networking company is looking to add a Mechanical Design Engineer focused on tooling. This role will sit within manufacturing and be a part of a new team, the infrastructure design team. This team will be focused on the design, development, and validation of tooling and fixtures that support NPI and high volume manufacturing. The Mechanical Design Engineer will have the opportunity to ideate and build tools from concept to CAD development to production in order to improve and support product manufacturing.

Must have skills:

  • 5-7 years of mechanical design experience creating tooling and fixtures
  • Fluent in 3D CAD and Creo/ProEngineer (SolidWorks not sufficient)
  • Experience working in manufacturing design (designing jigs, tooling, fixtures, etc.)
  • Experience working in a high-volume manufacturing environment
  • Understanding of DFM/DFA
  • Understanding of fabrication methods (CNC, molding, sheet metal)
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams including hardware engineering, platform design, reliability engineering, test, etc.
  • Experience working with CMs (contract manufacturers) from prototype to build. Must be willing to travel internationally to CMs on occasion.
Nice to Have Skills:
  • Experience with liquid cooling
  • Experience writing python scripts for automation
  • Experience with Agile PLM and Windchill PDMLink

Background/industry:
Has worked at a networking or semiconductor company, e.g. LAM Research, Applied Materials, Cisco, Juniper, etc.

Education: 
BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering

Day to Day responsibilities:
  • Engineer, design, and validate custom tooling, test fixtures, and jigs to support high-volume production.
  • Translate mechanical and process requirements into CAD models, engineering drawings, and detailed documentation.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide feedback to optimize DFM/DFT aspects of new products.
  • Partner closely with Hardware Engineering, Platform Design, CM partners, and Reliability Engineering teams.
  • Select and specify manufacturing processes (CNC, injection molding, sheet metal, coatings) as applicable to designed tools.
  • Drive tolerance stack-up analysis for complex mechanical assemblies.
  • Interface with overseas CMs and vendors to enable tool release, prototype builds, and pilot production.
  • Investigate and recommend new manufacturing technologies to improve quality and cost- effectiveness of tooling solutions.
  • Create and manage BOMs, ECOs, and revision histories using Agile PLM and Windchill PDMLink.
