Solution Architect – Energy & Utilities – Remote (Houston, Atlanta, or Chicago)
TSG is seeking a Solution Architect, Energy & Utilities to play a critical pre-sales role in shaping and advancing complex modernization initiatives for electric, gas, and water utilities and independent power producers (IPPs). This role partners closely with sales leadership and delivery experts to design integrated, outcome-led solutions that modernize utility operations without disrupting regulated, mission-critical environments.
Unlike roles focused on a single platform or lifecycle, this Principal Consultant operates across customer, asset, workforce, data, cloud, security, and program delivery, helping utilities connect strategy to execution and adoption through a phased, continuous modernization approach.
You will be supported by a deep bench of internal subject matter experts, including domain specialists in areas such as cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, data and analytics, and agile delivery, as well as energy and utilities practitioners with hands-on experience across utility-specific platforms and technologies. These teams actively partner on pre-sales discovery, solution design, and validation to ensure approaches are both technically sound and client-ready.
This role is remote within the United States, with a strong preference for candidates based in Houston, Chicago, or Atlanta due to proximity to key clients, industry talent, and market activity.
Company Overview:
The Select Group (TSG) is a privately held technology consulting firm headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina. Since 1999, we’ve been at the forefront of delivering end-to-end consulting services to clients across diverse industries throughout the U.S. and Canada. We help clients solve their toughest challenges, inspire digital innovation and drive meaningful results.
We are committed to supporting various client needs, helping them to address ever-evolving trends across various industries. Our service areas—Cloud & Infrastructure, Cybersecurity, Data & AI, Digital Transformation, Learning & Development, and Project Management & Agile—are designed to create long-term success by aligning with your business goals and advancing to meet future demands.
Key Responsibilities:
Pre-Sales Leadership & Client Discovery
- Partner with sales leadership to support qualification, discovery, and solution shaping for complex Energy & Utilities pursuits.
- Lead discovery conversations with utility and IPP stakeholders across operations, grid, IT, OT, engineering, customer, and executive teams.
- Translate operational and business challenges into clear, outcome-driven solution approaches that balance reliability, regulatory constraints, and modernization goals.
Solution Architecture Across Utility & Energy Operations
- Architect integrated, end-to-end modernization solutions across core utility and energy platforms, including:
- Grid and Distribution Operations: ADMS, OMS, SCADA, and grid analytics
- Distributed Energy Resources (DERs): integration, orchestration, forecasting, and operational visibility
- Geospatial & Network Systems: GIS platforms supporting asset, outage, and planning use cases
- Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and meter data management
- Work, Asset, and Workforce Management supporting field operations and asset reliability
- Customer and Meter-to-Cash platforms where grid, usage, and customer experience intersect
- Design solution architectures that integrate IT and OT systems, enabling improved situational awareness, operational efficiency, and decision-making.
Data, Analytics & Modern Platforms
- Shape data and analytics strategies that unify grid, asset, customer, and operational data to support:
- Grid reliability and resilience
- DER management and load forecasting
- Asset performance and capital planning
- Customer insights and operational efficiency
- Leverage modern cloud, data, and analytics platforms to enable scalable, secure, and future-ready utility architectures.
Security, Risk & Reliability by Design
- Embed cybersecurity, regulatory compliance, and operational resilience into solution designs, particularly for mission-critical OT and grid systems.
- Help clients navigate the tradeoffs between modernization speed and operational risk.
Proposal, RFP & Deal Support
- Contribute to proposals, RFP responses, and oral presentations by defining:
- Solution architectures and modernization roadmaps
- Phased delivery and sequencing strategies
- Key assumptions, dependencies, and risk considerations
- Partner with delivery leaders to ensure solutions are credible, executable, and aligned to TSG’s integrated delivery model.
Market Insight & Advisory Support
- Bring informed perspective on industry trends including grid modernization, DER growth, electrification, energy transition, and increasing operational complexity.
- Act as a trusted advisor in early client conversations, helping utilities and IPPs frame modernization decisions before requirements are fully defined.
Key Qualifications:
- 7+ years of experience in utility consulting, solution architecture, or pre-sales roles supporting complex technology and transformation initiatives.
- Direct experience working with utilities, ideally across multiple functional areas.
- Experience supporting $1M+ consulting or transformation pursuits with multiple stakeholders.
- Proven ability to simplify complex utility and technology topics for executive audiences.
- Strong workshop facilitation, presentation, and stakeholder management skills.
- Comfort operating in ambiguity and shaping solutions before requirements are fully defined.
Utility & Energy Systems Fluency
- Broad utility and energy systems understanding across grid operations, field operations, customer platforms, and enterprise environments, with the ability to connect OT and IT systems into cohesive, end-to-end solutions.
- Architecture-level fluency across core operational technologies such as GIS, ADMS, OMS, SCADA, DER management, and AMI, including how these systems interact with data platforms, analytics, and enterprise applications.
- Experience operating in hybrid OT/IT environments, with an understanding of reliability, safety, cybersecurity, and regulatory constraints that shape modernization decisions in utilities and IPPs.
- Ability to evaluate and articulate tradeoffs between operational risk, modernization speed, scalability, and cost, particularly in mission-critical grid and generation contexts.
- Comfort working across multiple anchor domains (e.g., grid operations, asset and workforce management, customer platforms, data and analytics), bringing depth in some areas and informed judgment across others.
- Strong understanding of how cloud, data, analytics, and security enable modernization of utility and energy operations without disrupting core services.
- Sales teams rely on you as a core pursuit partner, not an overlay.
- Clients view you as credible, pragmatic, and utility-savvy.
- Solutions consistently reflect TSG’s differentiation: integrated delivery, phased modernization, and adoption built in.
- Deals progress faster because risks, dependencies, and tradeoffs are addressed early.
