Job Details

I have stripped out all references to the previous company and the pool/spa industry. This is now a standardized, industry-agnostic job description for a Regulatory Compliance Specialist in a high-tech or industrial manufacturing environment.

Regulatory Compliance Specialist

Department: Engineering Services / Quality & Compliance

Reports To: Engineering Manager / Director of Compliance

Role Summary

The Regulatory Compliance Specialist is responsible for enabling the certification and global approval of engineered products and equipment. This self-motivated, hands-on individual is vital in informing engineering teams of regulatory requirements during the design process, developing and implementing pre-compliance test plans, and coordinating testing at internal and external laboratories to ensure compliance with UL, CSA, IEC, and other international standards.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Compliance Expert: Serve as the primary product compliance authority during the development of new solutions, acting as both an individual contributor and technical leader.

  • Design Support: Provide technical interpretation of agency standards during the design, development, and prototyping phases to ensure "compliance by design."

  • Agency Liaison: Serve as the direct interface and facilitator between internal development teams and external regulatory agencies (e.g., UL, ETL, TUV).

  • Lab Management: Act as the owner of internal lab accreditations, overseeing processes and procedures to ensure continued conformance to applicable regulatory standards.

  • Audit Leadership: Successfully host and manage facility audits by regulatory bodies at any company site as required.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work across functional organizations to ensure project success and maintain positive working relationships at all levels.

  • Project Tracking: Drive deliverables and deadlines within a documented timeline, managing multiple projects through varying stages of development.

  • Risk Mitigation: Monitor and adjust project plans based on changing priorities, resources, or evolving regulatory landscapes.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience: 3+ years in Safety and Product Regulatory Compliance, specifically managing and leading compliance engineering projects.

  • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of electronic and/or hydraulic designs, including pumps, motors, and automated control systems.

  • Stakeholder Management: Proven ability to gain consensus across a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders.

  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to exercise diplomacy and problem-solving skills with all levels of staff.

  • Software Proficiency: Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) and SharePoint.

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related technical field (or 3–5 years of equivalent experience in a similar role).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Standard Knowledge: Demonstrated familiarity with UL, CSA, IEC, CE, RoHS, and REACH standards.

  • Specific Mastery: Prefer knowledge of industrial standards such as UL 508, UL 778, and IEC 60335 or equivalent international standards.

  • Seniority: 5+ years of experience in Safety and Product Regulatory Compliance within a manufacturing or engineering environment.

Core Behavioral Characteristics

  • Self-Starter: High-energy and resourceful, with a strong drive for accomplishment and the ability to work independently.

  • Detail-Oriented: A strong personal work ethic with meticulous attention to technical details and documentation.

  • Hands-on Problem Solver: Willingness to work in a lab environment to overcome technical obstacles and validate designs.

  • Integrity: Demonstrated understanding of the appropriate handling of confidential and proprietary information.
