REX Blood Services
UNC REX Healthcare is proud to be home to the first community blood donor facility in the Triangle.
The REX Donor Center was founded in 1962 by a concerned group of physicians and community
leaders who wanted to ensure that there would always be a safe and adequate blood supply to meet the needs of local patients. This not-for-profit, community blood bank exceeds the safety standards set by the blood banking industry and is accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks, College of American Pathology and the Food and Drug Administration.
There is no substitute for human blood, and while blood is something that can be spared by donors – there is not enough to go around. Every three seconds someone is in need of blood, and one out of every ten people entering a hospital will need blood during their stay.
Every day in the U.S. about 32,000 pints of blood are used for patients in need. Blood is used for:
Accident Victims: Depending on the injury, between four and 100+ units
Orthopedics (Hip replacement or surgery): Between two and eight units
Open He
art Surgery: Between six to eight units (or more if problems arise)
Neurosurgery (Spinal/Brain Surgery): Between two to four units
Premature Babies: One donation can transfuse up to four babies, who sometimes need blood once a day until they are strong enough to go home.
Cancer Patients: Usually use blood and blood products on an ongoing basis while undergoing cancer treatment. Apheresis platelets are the most common blood product used to support cancer patients.
